Green smoothies are not a new thing. But there are a few tricks to making them yummy and easy, but still healthy. Because if its going to make a huge mess in your kitchen, and your kids refuse to drink it, what’s the freaking point?!?
Just so you know, I am TOTALLY qualified to write this post. Why, you ask? Because I used to work at Jamba Juice in high school. See? Totally qualified. At Jamba Juice, when I worked there 10 years ago… Wait, no, more like 15 years ago. Yikes. Anyway, when I worked there, a 24 oz smoothie was made with 12 oz of juice, 2 scoops of sherbet/frozen yogurt and then 3 scoops of frozen fruit and a scoop of crunchy ice.
I have taken that knowledge, and made it work for me now. And this is what I came up with. I call it Green Caribbean Passion. 🙂
How to make it:
Spinach for the greens. I don’t taste much difference between baby and regular spinach. Regular spinach is cheaper (around $2 for a large bag)
The juice: Yes, it would be healthier if you juiced the fruit yourself, and yes, there are healthier juice options. But V8 V-Fusion juice is 100% juice (fruits and veggies) and is super yummy. I like the Peach/Mango flavor (around $3 per bottle).
The Fruit: Find a delicious blend of frozen mixed fruit. The kind I get is from Walmart and it has strawberries, peaches, pineapple and mangos. Costco has a really good one with papaya too. Each big bag is around $8.
I put the spinach in first (so it gets blended up more) Then about 12 oz of juice, and about 1 1/2 c of frozen fruit. I know, don’t judge me because I don’t have a Vitamix or Blendtec. But my Kitchen Aid does a pretty dang good job of pureeing a smoothie.

The finished product for me and my 2 year old. My last tip: use a green cup for the kids, so they can’t see the less-than-appetizing color! 🙂
This same theory can be applied to different combinations of flavors. I would suggest using either pineapple or banana to counter-act the spinach flavor.
