Take the Christmas cheer up a notch with colorful DIY Christmas decorations. Whimsical rainbow crafts and fun colors are truly merry & bright!
I’m not sure when it all started. I promise I had a fairly normal childhood.
But somewhere along the way, I decided Christmas would be way more fun with bright colors like hot pink, teal, purple, lime green and orange. And I never looked back!
My “merry & bright” Christmas decorations have expanded in the past few years to include a huge rainbow Christmas Tree Cone forest and also a rainbow nativity set, painted with love by my kids.
My husband likes to tease me about the color palette. He jokes that its “Cinco de Christmas” or just calls it “Kylie’s crazy Christmas colors.” lol
Embrace the COLORFUL Christmas!
But I figure that Christmastime is the one time of year when all interior decorating rules go out the window, and we’re free to fancy up our homes with all the twinkle lights, bows, sparkles and color our little hearts desire.
This much glitter is not socially acceptable throughout the year.
But at Christmas-time? Totally fair game!
Kids love a Colorful Christmas
One of my proudest moments was when we were gifted a advent calendar from a family member. It was a nice fabric advent calendar, with a red background and green Christmas trees.
My oldest was about 5 at the time and said to me one day, as she was moving the little snowflake to the next pocket on the advent calendar, “Mom, you should make a new one of these.” She continued, trying to be polite as possible, “This one’s colors just aren’t very …Christmassy.”
So, my work here is done. haha
Merry and Bright DIY Christmas Decorations
I thought it would be fun to round up all of my colorful DIY Christmas decorations, along with a few projects from other color-loving bloggers.
I’m looking forward to adding more rainbow Christmas decorations in the future. Like a rainbow Christmas village, or maybe a rainbow Christmas tree skirt. Oh Christmas is so fun!
Merry and Bright DIY Christmas Decorations
Christmas is a season of JOY and, for me that means COLOR! I've collected some of my favorite colorful DIY projects from my site and a few others. All "merry and bright"!
Glittery Christmas Tree Cones DIY
My pride and joy of my decorations is these gorgeous glittery rainbow Christmas tree cones! They are so fun to make, my collection keeps expanding. I think I have 15 cones now! They have serious impact, my guests gush and swoon over how pretty they are!
Rainbow Painted Nativity Set
My kids had so much fun making this painted rainbow nativity set! We used an unpainted set and chose the perfect pearlized craft paint for a beautiful (and forgiving!) finish. This little project would make a great gift!
DIY Colorful Ornament Wreath
I have to admit, this colorful ornament wreath is one of my most favorite Christmas craft projects! These ornaments wreaths (in any color!) are really fun to make at a little craft party, or a quick weekend craft project. They are fairly inexpensive too, if you find a lot of the ornaments in the dollar section.
Easy Mini-Ornament Garland
Sometimes its impossible to find garland in just the right color combination. Easy solution: make your own! This garland is a snap to put together, with a thicker ribbon that holds the mini-ornaments in place naturally. I'm dying to re-do this garland in rainbow!
Sparkly Noel Cardboard Letters DIY
These inexpensive cardboard letters have serious sparkle after a coat of craft paint and a heavy layer of glitter! I'm considering getting letters to do "CHRISTMAS" in rainbow colors. Squeeee!
DIY Painted Rainbow Nutcrackers
Can we pretty please rainbow all the things?! This is a fun and colorful craft project, and could be inexpensive if you use cheap nutcrackers from the dollar stores. I think they'd be darling in the pearlized craft paint that I'm obsessed with this Christmas!
DIY Modern Tiered Ombre Christmas Trees
If you know me at all, you know I love colorful Christmas tree cones! These ombre cones are classy and colorful, and surprisingly easy to make with craft paint and a gold paint marker. The cones can be stacked and rearranged in different combinations too. I know my kids would love to play with them, they're like those baby stacking cubes, except cones...and Christmassy. lol
DIY Circus Animal Cookie Ornaments
These cute Circus Animal ornaments would be a fun project with kids! They are made with air-dry clay which makes it a simple Christmas craft. I just love the teeny colorful sprinkles.
How to Dye Bottlebrush Trees
Oh my heavens, these rainbow bottle brush trees just about broke the internet last year. They are so cute and nostalgic and funky all at the same time. I've shopped around trying to cobble together a rainbow bottlebrush tree collection, but dyeing them would be a lot easier!
DIY Rainbow Christmas Stockings
If I didn't already have colorful stockings for my family, I would absolutely make these beautiful rainbow striped stockings. The tutorial is really simple, so even if your sewing skills aren't pro-level, you could still make these. They'd be fun in ombre shades too!
If you love color as much as I do, I’d love to have you follow along with my fun and colorful projects on Instagram. I’m @thehowtomom and we can oooo and ahhh over all the beautiful rainbow things together!
