Portable Art Tray (magnetic!)

Kylie

So we have an art closet, and its a mess. My daughters love to craft and color, so its been a challenge to have supplies accessible for my 5 year old (who loves to color on paper), but not so accessible for my 2 year old (who loves to color on herself).

I’ve been using a combination of little bins and baggies, but it just hasn’t worked out like I wanted. I’ve been marinating on the problem for awhile, and the solution came to me at Target in the dollar aisles (love the dollar aisles!!).

Markers and colored pencils would be perfect in these little pails… if only there was a way to hold the pails… on a tray… a cookie sheet! With magnets! YES!

I am thrilled with how it turned out. It solves our problem, its totally functional, and I only spent $7!

I used:
a cookie sheet (Dollar Store)
4 galvanized pails (Target)
1 small plastic organizer tray (Target)
1 package of magnet sheets (Walmart – make sure they’re strong!)

I’ll be honest, the magnetic thing was a challenge to my brain. I kept trying different combinations of magnets and couldn’t make the stupid pails stick to the stupid tray. After a wasted sheet of magnets, I figured out that you have to stick two magnets together with the adhesive sides together. Its a polarity thing, although I couldn’t explain it if I tried. But trust me. Two magnets. Adhesive sides together.

The plastic bin won’t need two magnets, just stick the adhesive side to the bottom of the bin And then just stick them to the pan where you want them!

The magnets I used are nice and strong, so the little pails won’t be wobbling around. PS I found a larger pail for the chubby markers.

And then just fill the containers with your favorite art supplies. I’m a full grown adult, but this makes me want to sit and color!

And its easy for my 5 year old to carry around. Keeps things organized (be still my heart). And I can put it up out of reach of my 2 year old.

Success.
