For the first 30 years of my life, I washed my hair daily. Every blasted day. My thick hair was somehow greasy and frizzy at the same time. Combing it out after washing it took about 8 minutes, and blow drying took close to 12 minutes, then either straightening or curling took another 10-20. Every freaking day! Because I had to! It looked greasy around my face. It separated and kinked and just looked BAD unless I washed it. So I did. Every dang day.
Last fall, I stumbled across a pin for dry shampoo. It was a revelation! I heard the angels sing! So I tried it. MIRACLE! I sprayed it around my greasy hairline, blew it dry and viola! Normal looking hair!! So I started washing it every other day… then every third… and now occasionally every fourth (shh! don’t tell!). To say it has changed my life is a total understatement. I have skimmed off probably 2-3 hours a week that I used to spend washing, combing, blow drying and styling. Now I can get up and be out the door in like …20 minutes. Its wonderful.
I tweaked the recipe a bit, and here’s what I came up with:
Spray Shampoo (aka dry shampoo)
1/4 c. cornstarch
1/4 c. rubbing alcohol
3/4 c. water
5-7 drops melaleuca oil (optional, but it really helps keep your scalp happy between washes)
Use a funnel to pour all ingredients in spray bottle. Shake vigorously before each use (the cornstarch will settle at the bottom). Spritz spray shampoo on roots around hairline til damp, then blow dry with round brush to soften and style.
I have blond hair and this works for me perfectly, but it might be slightly noticeable on darker hair. It can make darker hair look a bit gray/dull. I’ve seen people suggest adding cocoa powder to help with that.
Be careful where you spray. This stuff leaves little powder spots on mirrors, walls and clothes. It’s not permanent or anything, but it can make a mess.
Check your skin and ears when you’re done to make sure you rub away any random cornstarch spots.
Now its your turn to re-claim 2 hours of your week!
